This volume is dedicated to applied linguistic research on
multilingualism. The term "applied linguistics" is used in a broad sense
and describes several examples of the cooperation between linguists and
public service institutions or commercial companies. Furthermore,
renowned scholars in the field discuss how applied linguistics may
enhance communication in the workplace, in schools and in public service
institutions. The areas of application presented in this volume include
intercultural communication, language acquisition, language contact, and
sociolinguistic variation. The aim is to highlight the importance of
applied linguistic research concerning the deployment of
multilingualism, and, furthermore, to stimulate the debate about it.
